Hepatitis C Is Often Curable

Hepatitis C is different from many chronic viral infections because it can often be cured, not just managed. Today’s standard treatment uses direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications, an oral regimen that targets the virus directly and has replaced older treatments that were harder to tolerate.

Most patients complete treatment with mild or no side effects, and many return to their normal routine well before treatment ends.

Who Should Get Tested for Hepatitis C?

National screening guidelines recommend that all adults get tested for Hepatitis C at least once, even without symptoms, since many people carrying the virus don’t know about it.

Testing is especially important if you’ve ever injected drugs or received a blood transfusion before 1992. It also matters if you’ve been on long-term dialysis or have other risk factors your provider can review with you. If any of this applies to you, or you simply want peace of mind, testing is quick and confidential at both our Norwalk and Glastonbury locations.

FAQ

FAQs About Hepatitis C Testing & Treatment

Is Hepatitis C curable?

Yes. Unlike some chronic viral infections, Hepatitis C can often be cured with modern treatment. Direct-acting antiviral medications have significantly improved cure rates over the past decade, and most patients complete treatment successfully.

Hepatitis C is treated with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications, an oral treatment taken over a set course determined by your provider. These medications target the virus directly and have replaced older, harder-to-tolerate treatments like interferon therapy. Your provider will determine the right medication and length of treatment based on your specific diagnosis.

Testing starts with a simple blood test that checks for Hepatitis C antibodies. If that test is positive, we’ll follow up with a viral load test to confirm whether the infection is still active. This two-step process is standard for an accurate diagnosis, and every new patient aged eighteen and older can be tested as part of their care at Circle Care Center.

Modern Hepatitis C medications are much easier to tolerate than older treatments, and most patients experience mild or no side effects at all. Some people notice temporary fatigue or headaches when starting treatment. Your provider will monitor how you’re doing throughout treatment and address any side effects along the way.

Most Hepatitis C treatment courses run eight to twelve weeks, though your provider will confirm the exact length based on your diagnosis and health history. Treatment today is much shorter than it used to be, and many patients are able to complete it without major disruption to their daily routine.

Most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, cover Hepatitis C treatment. Coverage details vary by plan, so our team can help you understand your specific benefits before treatment begins.
